We have been working with Adivasi (Kol) and Vanvasi (Mushar, Benvanshi, Dhaikar, Sapera and Nats) communities with the objective to put them in the mainstream with the ongoing transformation processes of achieving the long-term goal of sustainable freedom and livelihood. The communities are located in Shankergarh, Jasra, Meja, Koraon, Manda, Bahadurpur, Saidabad, Handia and Pratappur blocks of Allahabad and adjacent blocks of Chitrakoot, Mirzapur, Kaushambi and Pratapgarh districts. These communities are mostly recruited in stone quarries, brick kilns, agricultural farms around their residences in lieu of illegal advances and in construction and hazardous industrial activities at distant locations as migrant workers. Majority of the households are trapped into intergeneration debt-bondage situations. PGS has organized them into 410 SHGs. Those SHGs have formed their Federation –Pragati Vahini. Around 5000 households with about 26000 lives are associated with the Federation.
We works with the aim of social, economic and cultural uplift of rural poor. In its initial years PGS had just been a support agency and undertook advocacy through mobilization and sensitization of community members to unite and raise their voices against local issues like it has organized bidi workers to get minimum wages, effort to develop rural education by empowering girls of the school to control and mange their school at the time of crisis, public service trade union activity, and organized stonebreakers for sustainable freedom. Currently, PGS is in the phase of transition and regeneration and it is now spreading its activities to broader areas tackling broader issues of sustenance and exploitation.
